18th and early 19th century Indiana

     The Indiana War Memorial has a museum displaying artifacts and re-creations of conflicts involving Hoosiers or the Hoosier State. Fort Sackville was a British fort located near what is now Vincennes, IN. It was captured by George Rogers Clark in 1779.

Indiana War Museum - Architectural Models

Indiana War Memorial. Among the artifacts on display are some architectural models.

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Located in the center of the city, it's a lovely focal point. Lady Victory is facing due south to keep eternal vigilance over the old Confederacy. The surrounding buildings around the monument are, by ordinance, shorter than the monument so as not to diminish its glory. 

The USS Indiana (BB-58)

"USS Indiana (BB-58), a South Dakota-class battleship, was the fourth ship of the United States Navy named in honor of the 19th state. Her keel was laid down on 20 November 1939 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company of Newport News, Virginia. She was launched on 21 November 1941 sponsored by Mrs. Lewis C. Robbins, daughter of Indiana governor Henry F. Schricker, and commissioned on 30 April 1942, Captain Aaron Stanton Merrill in command."

Still haven't figured out the best way to photograph models like this in acrylic cases, especially when the surrounding lights cause glare.

Cobra Attack Helicopter

The Indiana War Memorial has a smallish museum dedicated to the various conflicts Hoosiers have fought in.  In the Vietnam section is a Cobra attack helicopter (AH-1(?) - don't know enough to know which variant this is).

Model of USS Indianapolis

The USS Indianapolis was a Portland-class cruiser of the US Navy. Sunk by a Japanese sub, the 900 survivors were at sea for four days before being spotted by a naval Ventura. The character Captain Quint in Jaws was a survivor and famously described his ordeal and his hatred of sharks.

This is a model at the Indiana War Memorial built by William Waldorf.

Indianapolis War Memorial

Went to the Indiana War Memorial.  General John Pershing laid the cornerstone of the memorial on July 4, 1927, saying he was "consecrating the edifice as a patriotic shrine".

Indiana War Memorial

This is the Shrine Room, built to honor the veterans of World War I.  It is clad in materials from all of the allied countries.
